Western Australia is home to:

  • 141 of Australia's 207 mammal species, 25 unique to the state
  • 439 reptile species, 187 unique to the state
  • more than 1,600 fish species
  • hundreds of thousands of invertebrate species.

Western Australia has more than its fair share of unusual native animals, some of which are threatened.

The profile sheets below provide information about some of these animals and ways the department is helping to protect them against feral predators and other threats.

Note that the conservation status may have changed as species recover from their threatened status as a result of Western Shield and similar programs
